( general ) ❅ headcanon v. evidence
“Being unwanted, unloved, uncared for, forgotten by everybody, I think that is a much greater hunger, a much greater poverty than the person who has nothing to eat.” - Mother Teresa
(the beginning of jack frost / rising from the ice / jackson's death / animation appreciation / FRECKLES)
→ jack can be seen by animals (x)
the dog in this scene looks up at jack while the man looks down at the ice / animals can see spirits (x)
→ the staff is not the source of his powers but used to channel them (x)
the staff forms frost in areas that jack touches, but without his touch, it remains a regular wooden staff (used for control over the wind)
(he develops enough wind control to master his own balance on high places)
→ jack has strong big brother instincts (x)
he wore tattered clothes and no shoes in order to let his sister be provided with more
(even alive, he spent most of his time with children much younger than him)
→ jack doesn't fully grasp physical contact (x)
years of loneliness, he doesn't reach out to touch unless touched first, surprised when the guardians do, and only begins to respond to touches near the end of the film (reacting to jamie's hug)
→ jack has an extremely protective nature (x)
he has always been very protective of children due to his brotherly tendencies, showcased with his treatment towards jamie, sophie, and baby tooth
→ jack still has selfish tendencies (x)
being alone for so long, he doesn't hesitate when he has a chance to find out who he is, even if it means forgetting his promise to the guardians
→ the dream sand gives jack a sense of hope (x)
in the dark of night when jack feels at his lowest, the sand brightens his spirits again
→ jack presents constant cases of escapism (x)
when he gets scared or upset, instead of facing his problems, jack runs away off on his own or uses fun to try and deny the truth of reality
→ jack begins to develop bags under his eyes (x)
the strains of loneliness and sleepless nights show up physically in his face over 300 years (see also stress lines)
→ it's possible that jack has a mental control over his powers (x)
he has the ability to make ice continue to form into a desired shape even without his touch
→ jack shows his feelings with physical action (x)
when excited, he exerts a lot of energy in movement, bouncing around on the balls of his feet (more bouncy goodness)
→ jack's powers are connected to his emotions (x)
evident in the script, he can make snow and flurries subconsciously when upset or angered
→ jack showcases different personalities to different people (x)
he tries to act tough and rebellious towards adult figures, will banter and tease someone who tries to challenge him, will enjoy and seek fun with those who accept him, and will genuinely be protective towards people he cares for
→ jack has no interest in material things (x)
jack sees the way guardians do things as bribing kids with items like gifts, eggs, and money, while his is pure natural fun
(jack has further dislike towards the guardian title because the guardians have received more attention despite his own efforts)
→ jack faces great hurt over helplessness (x)
the fact that he couldn't do anything to help sandy has a drastic effect on his being, that sense of being a bystander and never being able to do anything
→ jack often perches on high places (x)
possibly more of a symbolism of his escapism from reality
→ jack sees beauty in the little things (x)
even after three hundred years, he still finds joy in his frost and snow (also evident with the floating bunny in jamie's room)
→ jack honestly believes he was born on the night of the pond (x)
and didn't actually believe he had any possible life before that
→ despite his age, jack still bears strong innocence (x)
his lack of interaction keeps him from wanting to trust too easily, but when he does, he can become twice as vulnerable and break more easily if that trust is broken / he may also be less likely to be an initiator of intimacy
→ jack never really allows himself to break down (x)
despite the fact that there's probably been a thousand instances where he feels the need to
(just as with sadness, he can't contain genuine happiness either)
→ as in his character, jack will play off most of his hurt as a joke (x)
like just as how people don't let him easily forget that he's invisible, he will pass it off as not being any sort of big deal (a subtle plea here is quickly covered up with a joke)
(he tries to smile despite being told he doesn't know how to bring joy to children)
→ jack's sister could be the initial source of his powers (x)
having told her to believe in him, she continued to do so even after his death
→ despite his teasing nature, he genuinely seeks out friendships with other spirits (x)
his sincere happiness to see bunny again is minor evidence that, especially because they're the only ones who can see him, jack's always sought out to get closer to the guardians (also shown with how he always tried to break into north's place and how excited he becomes upon seeing the sandy's dream sand)
(and look how excited he gets over being given permission to drive the sleigh)
( personal headcanons )
→ jack has a severe dislike/fear of darkness (x)
a reminder of his time in the lake, he also feels greater loneliness during the night
(his revival is his first salvation from the darkness)
→ there may have been a point in time where even he didn't think he was real (x)
when he first experiences being walked through, he panics touching his chest to check if he's really there, and being so freshly awake, he wouldn't really know otherwise
→ jack will often forget what being who he is entails (x)
(connected with escapism theory) he may even spite his powers, knowing that for whatever reason he has them, they keep him from being seen, shown with how his face shows anger the moment he catches sight of the frost (he often times even forgets he's invisible)
